Maslow, Durkheim, And Freud - 1737 Words

Weber, Durkheim, and Freud each offered a fascinating account of the role of religion in modern life. Weber and Durkheim specifically asked how to act ethically in a world of fragmenting values. Freud largely bypassed ethics, looking instead at how the individual utilizes values in negotiating pleasures, pains, and disappointments. While these three thinkers range from attention to the individual (Freud) to the social (Durkheim), and from a general, primitivistic (? Do you mean that he looked at â€Å"primitive religions† – the reason he did that was he theorized all aspects of religion could be traced by to the most primitive religion thus the elementary forms of religious life) view of religion (Durkheim) to a very specific, well-articulated one (Weber), they all share attention to the role of rules, the place of the sacred, the source of religious authority, and the value (or lack thereof) of religion in procuring happiness in modern life. (do you mean source of r eligious authority being human beings? Socially constructed? As for happiness, only Freud articulated it that way. Both Durkheim and Weber were concerned with conflict (Durkheim as a pathology and Weber as a core of modernity and modern institutions) For Weber, the Protestant work ethic reflects control of self and environment through calculating reason. In Freud’s view, our ideals of omniscience and omnipotence, reflecting our desire to avoid pain and procure what we need, are projected onto the deity. F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby - 1367 Words

Money, commonly associated with happiness and success, is deceiving because it doesn t necessarily breed enjoyment at all. Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin in the Sun and F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby examine the difference between wealth and appreciation of life. Lorraine Hansberry explains this with Walter, a negro father in a poor family who seeks more money than is realistic to bring happiness into the family. Fitzgerald uses the character Jay Gatsby to show that wealth doesn t imply success or happiness. Both characters occupy strikingly different roles in their stories, yet decently portray money s impact on life. In The Great Gatsby and Raisin in the Sun, wealth is made to seem as the key to happiness, but, in essence,†¦show more content†¦Additionally, near the end of Gatsby s experience, the narrator notes after hoping for a call from Daisy that No telephone message arrived...I have an idea that Gatsby himself didn t believe it would come, and perhaps he no lo nger cared (Fitzgerald pg. 161) Before his death, Gatsby realizes his loneliness, and the readers realize that all the wealth he had has no impact on his happiness later on. Additionally, at his grand parties, Gatsby was never seen by the attendees . This suggests Gatsby permitted anyone to come to help him not feel alone. However, it was only that opposite at Gatsby s eventual funeral in which only three people attended. The funeral is an excellent representation of Gatsby s loneliness all along. Diane Telgen in her examination of The Great Gatsby mentions Nick characterizes himself as someone who understands Gatsby better, who wants to set the record straight, and who sides with Gatsby against the world that made him up and then deserted him (Telgen 79). The desertion she touches on refers to the funeral s attendance and how the party s attendees left Gatsby, and how Nick, the narrator, was essentially the only person to want to get to know the man. What Gatsby sought was essentia lly out of reach; he had spent time acquiring money in illegal ways to try stealing the girl of his dreams, but in the process ruined his social life. His focus on money and his love was so

Women Are Cunning And Beast Like From The Waist They Are...

With a riotous appetite. Down from the waist they are centaurs, Though woman all above. But to the girdle do the gods inherit; Beneath is all the fiend’s. There’s hell, there’s darkness [4.6.121-125] Why call women centaurs? Aren’t Centaurs male? This use of the word makes the passage lose all of its intended meaning. To justify the use of this word, readers jump to the easy conclusion that Lear is trying to say that women are cunning and beast-like or that analyzing this may be going a little too deep. But, if King Lear chooses to overlook the entire picture that surrounds centaurs, there will be those who choose to question his choice of words and his credibility; which weakens his plea for pity and tarnishes his image as the wronged father. By referring to his daughters as centaurs, he fails to take the history and the entire construct of centaurs and creates a very distorted image, unintentionally proving to himself and the audience that he is weakened, scared and undeserving of sympathy. With the use of one word, he has tarnished his image as a king and a wronged protagonist on many levels. To start, the history and etymology of the word needs to be taken into consideration. According to the OED, a centaur referred to â€Å"A member of a people of ancient Thessaly renowned for their skill with horses†. The OED also mentions that that the Greeks coined this term to refer to a partnership that was not familiar to them; a partnership between man and horse that would become
